In 1925 Maria Concetta and Guiseppe Famularo arrived in New Zealand from the tiny volcanic island of Stromboli. They settled in Island Bay and were soon joined by other family members. As a strong family group they built new homes, new lives and raised young families. Eighty-five years later, Maria Concetta’s youngest son Dominic, alone and unwell, moved into a rest home. As if guided by the spirit of her great-aunt, the author arrived at 39 Brighton St, uncovering its hidden secrets, discovering her history and reflecting on her own life and future.

Piace molto la cucina italiana? Review by Morepork
Few New Zealanders could claim such a tangible and exotic heritage as this. Readers who enjoy a family history will relish this absorbing journey from 19th century Stromboli to present day Island Bay in Wellington. The author's own personal journey is interwoven and highlights a family homecoming to the Italian island of origin. The many poignant passages of this story are garnished with the tastes and treats of Italy.
A delightfully capricious and sensual story has resulted in a special family and national treasure. (Posted on 11/05/2012)
