Correne tells us, “Events that I’ve written about are based on Maori histories from various tribes. Most Europeans regard them as myths because they can’t be scientifically explained. I believe they did happen and that the power of the mind can influence what we experience. That’s why I won’t use real place names: I don’t want anything recounted here attributed to any particular iwi.” She adds, “I’m into conservation and the environment in a big way, and I love all the arts. I also know we hear too much about the bad kids, and not enough about those who are working hard to be good at something or who want to help others. That’s why I wanted to write about them.”

Action adventure with a real Kiwi flavour Review by readwarbler
The action starts on page one, when Skye thwarts a gang of smugglers from stealing endangered birds. This is a topical subject. Only yesterday, a German poacher was gaoled for attempting to smuggle rare native geckos out of New Zealand. The adopted daughter of a Department of Conservation officer, Skye is passionate about New Zealand’s forest and birds. No ordinary girl, she adopts an extraordinary dog called Roma. Roma has an inbuilt calendar, which reminds him when it’s Tuesday, the day an old lady is waiting for him with a juicy chop. He also comes complete with the ghost of a Maori chief and gets his new mistress into no end of trouble. Their adventures lead Skye into the world of Maori, their customs and their art. Soon she is organizing them into an artists’ colony. But the smugglers are waiting in the woods to cause more mayhem, leading to the exciting, action packed finale. What about the relic? No, I’m not going to give away the plot. You’ll have to read it to find out. I’m sure you will enjoy it just as much as I did. (Posted on 5/05/12)
Teen adventure with a message Review by Bookworm
A pacy story with plenty of action, Skye and the Lost Relic is a New Zealand story aimed at younger readers (9-14yrs). Beginning with teenager Skye waking in the night to shoot a thief with her dad’s tranquiliser gun, the story is classic adventure including a dramatic tumble into a cavern, standing up to a gang of boys, a shoot-out, and a final showdown with a smugglers’ ring. But it isn’t just a tale of high stakes and adrenalin: Walmsley’s novel has serious messages for young people about conserving our native heritage and striving to achieve the best of one’s potential. The characters are likeable and familiar, and Walmsley’s simple style is highly evocative: she manages to pack a lot of research into each sentence. Expect bulk orders from schools, libraries and discerning grandparents. This one is sure to appeal to the kids. (Posted on 26/04/12)
