‘He had left no footprints as he travelled, no permanence, and at times he felt a darkness closing in on him, and he longed for an end to it.’
Quentin Symes, a young New Zealand aid worker, has wandered around Latin America in a trance of guilt and self-loathing for ten years. But in Mexico he meets up with four people, one of whom he knows vaguely, and his horrifying secret is finally revealed.
The Ambush is the dramatic story of one man’s suffering and his search for self-forgiveness, set during the violent aftermath of Nicaragua’s Sandinista revolution.

- Latin American backdrop to a political thriller Review by Sally
- This is a very moving story by New Zealand writer, John Parkyn. The backdrop is the events in Nicaragua in the period following the people's revolution in 1979. The author has lived in Latin America for the past twenty years and knows the region well but brings his background and understanding of New Zealand characters to develop the story. Merging themes of politics, psychology and real events in a story is no easy challenge but this is a pacey read. (Posted on 28/08/12)

Parkyn's direct journalistic style shines in 'The Ambush.' (Posted on 5/06/12) - Love the Hemingway style Review by Bryan
- A descriptive and brief conversation style bringing out the characters reminded me very much of Ernest Hemingway's writing. An illuminating portrait of Latin American politics as well. (Posted on 4/03/12)
- A Good Read Review by Richard Ferguson
- Parkyn skillfully spins a tale of a group of people who spend a brief time together during which their characters are revealed for better or worse. It's a story of love, hate, tragedy, and dignity. A thoughtful and entertaining book. (Posted on 3/03/12)
